Flying Snake

I took today's photos quite some time ago. They're the only ones I have of this fascinating snake species.

A Golden Tree Snake

The Golden Tree Snake is one of just a handful of snakes in our area that are commonly referred to as "Flying Snakes". In reality they don't truly fly but they are able to flatten their bodies, launch themselves from high tree branches, and then glide. I've only ever seen videos of them gliding. When they do so they make slow-motion, wriggling-slithering type mid-air movements. They look deeply sinister and eerie during flight.

Golden Tree Snakes can grow to about 1.3 metres long. The one featured in today's post is roughly half that length. We spotted it through an airbrick in a garden wall on a busy street near our former home. It resided in a bush behind that wall for several days.

Beautiful images of this snake, Derek .
I've never seen a snake in nature.
Here in the Netherlands are few snakes.

whoa... another one I wouldn't like to 'fly' near me, ha ha.
I'm fascinated with the patterns on this snake - nature is marvellous isn't it.
Great shot Derek :D)

Wow, it has an amazing head and really would be something stunning to see if you had seen it fly/glide.

Hello Derek!:)How beautiful!:) What a gorgeous looking snake. Love the intricate design of the scales. It reminds me of a yellow and black Salamander I saw this week.Nicely captured images.:)

Oh my.. I chose the wrong day to return your kind visit. I am SO not a snake person - particularly snakes that would sail through the air.. ack! But there's no denying that these are fine photographs of an interesting creature, to say the least. Still I'm glad that our local pseudo-flying creatures are flying squirrels and not snakes!

That's a handsome snake! I'd like to see it "fly", as long as it was not in my direction.

Such a handsome snake, and superb photos Derek. I seem to remember watching a nature show a while back where I saw a snake 'fly'. It was a fascinating spectacle.

Beautiful snake. That would be so eerie to see them "fly". I know someone who had a snake fall out of a tree into her kayak. But she thinks it just fell. Either way, a little too close for comfort.

What a little beauty, great photos. Are they venomous?

It has a beautiful pattern on its back! But I would not like to see one flying/gliding toward me. Now that would be scary! Flying away from me would be a neat sight to see though!
