Shrub Frog

A Shrub Frog - clinging to the back of a mirror in our old outside washroom

In the days before we installed an indoor washroom we often used to see this Shrub Frog. It would sometimes climb out on to the top of the mirror and stare back at me as I enjoyed an early morning shave.

Shrub Frogs (also commonly known as "moss frogs", "bush frogs", and "tree frogs") are extremely agile, able to accurately leap relatively large distances and land safely, and can walk up seemingly any vertical surface including wet tiles and wet glass without slipping at all. If you stand still fairly close to a Shrub Frog for long enough there is a fair chance that it will jump on to you, which, trust me, is always an unsettling experience. Shrub Frogs can be quite vocal at times too.

This is a new frog for me but I love all of them. I've never had one on my mirror though.:) They must have suction pads on their feet to climb a vertical wall, and from the photo it looks like they do.

Forgive me sweet frog, but you look like a practical joke. A toy with suction cup feet that a rotten kid might stick on his teachers desk or on a little girls chair. What can I say? I grew up with a bunch of mean kids!

He's actually pretty cute, but like all things scientifically classified as creepy crawlers, I 'd like to see him before he sees me! Especially early in the morning!!

Our tree frogs are green. We have a large one which sits on our window each night, waiting to catch insects drawn to the light inside.

Nice frog - ours will be starting to get vocal again if we get autumn rain.

Frogs are adorable, but I would find it very creepy to be greeted by those eyes in the mirror first thing in the morning. And I would definitely not want him to touch my skin!

I've always loved tree frogs. We'd see them on the glass at night on vacation in the South whenever it was humid or had rained. (I.e. just about every night in the summer!)

What a little cutie :) I used to live in Zambia where we used to have grey treefrogs that would do the same thing, you are so right, when they jump on you, it is always a surprise!

We used to have a tree frog that hung out on the same plant. For days and days it would be there. :p

Thanks folks for your interest in and kind words about this post.

Breathtaking,
Yes, they do have something like suction pads on their fingers and toes. Also they're unbelievably strong and deceptively lightweight.

Hootin' Anni,
I agree. By the way, it's nice to have a shaving friend.

Sallie FTL,
Thanks for your very amusing comment. I think that maybe we went to the same school....

Christa atCF,
You kind of get used to amphibians, reptiles, and creepy crawlies - and as they go bush frogs are probably one of the nicest of them.

Kristin_Texas,
Our experience of bush frogs is similar to yours. If they find somewhere that suits them they don't move on at all.

Retriever,
Greetings to you too.
Thanks for the link.

Have a nice day everyone.

Wow, Derek... yes, I don't mind frogs being in the near vicinity, but for it to jump on me would be a whole different matter lol!!
Great photos there :D)
